Carpentry

We use both traditional and modern methods of carpentry for all work. We’re happy to take on jobs big and small.

Made on sight with the customer’s general ideas in mind, originally to be all oak, but due to an unsafe ash tree on the property which was cut down, it was decided to construct it from 50/50 oak and ash instead.

The treads are made from solid triangle ash blocks, which are hand planed and scraped to bring out the natural grain. Fixed to the strings with pegs and cut nails. The strings, handrails and bottom rails were given a beaded edge.

Newel posts were carved in a gothic style. The spindles were ash rectangle, in section with arrised edges they were all held in place by the mortises in the hand rails/bottom rails/treads.

All oak was limed to darken and age the wood, and then finished with a natural oil. Beadings carvings etc are all done and finished by hand.

The stairs were pegged/dowelled together, no glue was used anywhere in the construction. The landing/bridge in the property was also constructed to match the stairs. The stairs had an oak cusped truss above it with glassed windows either side.

Windows & Doors

Doors and windows can be made in many different timbers and finishes to suit customers’ requirements. Doors are usually of the planked and batten type, and have vertical planks nailed into horizontal battens, which originate from between the 15th century and the modern day – but anything can discussed.

They are normally made using a variety of traditional cut and decorative nails to hold the door together in a variety of patterns. They can also have decorative panels and cover strips as well as moulded or beaded boards.
